BlueShore Financial Longest Day Road Race 2015- Race Review

The BlueShore Finaical Longest Day Road Race was a great race! I complete the 10km distance Friday June 19, 2015. It was my second time participating in this event so I had a good idea of what to expect.

After party.

After party.

The event communication was excellent, and the registration was a reasonable $33.  This didn’t include a shirt,  however it did include a great after party with an amazing spread.
This is a smaller race, there are considerably less participants than a race like the SunRun. I think some people find it hard to fight the traffic and make it to UBC on a Friday night. Despite the smaller numbers the atmosphere was awesome, the weather amazing, and the variety of food afterward gets two thumbs up!

The 10km event started at 7:15pm so we left Richmond at 5:30pm to fight rush hour traffic to UBC. We made it to the campus at 6:30pm leaving us ample time to find parking, and hit the washrooms before the race started.

IMG_0801The weather was perfect, it was about 16-17 degrees and sunny, cooling off for the evening. The course  runs through the UBC campus,  each time I run it I am impressed with the beauty of both the campus grounds, and the architecture. The course had its fair share of hills but nothing grueling. The route is a 5km loop, so for the 10K event you complete the route twice, not my favorite, but it wasn’t so bad since it was only 10km.

I finished in 54:52, not a personal best, but not my worst time, and  I did beat my 2014 time. After the race we enjoyed the BBQ spending time catching up with my friend Wealth of Health, and crossing our fingers for a raffle prize. I regret to report that I am 0/2 on a raffle prizes at this event.IMG_0798

IMG_0698Another highlight for me was that my other half participated in  this event. It was his second organized event, and his first 10km. He completed it in an impressive 58:54,  which is fantastic for someone that claims not to be a runner. I am sure he often wonders how he gets roped into these things,  but I have a sneaking suspicion I might have a closet runner on my hands.

Overall I give this race a 5 out of 5, I can’t think of anything that I would change, it’s well organized, the venue is beautiful, and the after party is fantastic!   If you don’t park nearby, I would recommend taking advantage of the bag-check-in and bring warmer clothes,  it cools off fast.  Then you could use your bag to take advantage of the free samples while your hands are full with your dinner plate.

If you have never done this race, I highly recommend you try it! If you did participate in this event, let me know what you thought of it below. If you have any questions about the race, feel free to comment and I’ll get back to you.
