2015 Goals Recap

2015 Goals

2015 Goals

The end of the year provides a wonderful opportunity to look back on the last year of experiences and reflect on how they have shaped and changed us.  It also signals the start of a new and exciting year full of possibility and adventure.

Soon I’ll share my goals for 2016 but before I do its good practice to first to look back on the year.  Celebrate successes, acknowledge areas where I may have fallen short,  identify what I can improve upon,  and simply reflect on the year and the impact it has made.

Personal Goals

Purchase a new Computer. At the beginning of the year after considerable research and discussion we made the decision to purchase an all-in-one computer for the family.  The main objective being to make homework easier for the kids. We also purchased a laptop so I could work and blog without interfering with homework. I do have to admit the laptop was not only for selfless reasons… I am the techie in the house and the idea of sharing a computer is kind of like sharing a toothbrush…..gross 😉

Take more time for myself. This is a weak goal, not very specific or measurable….so I can’t really comment on whether this was successfully achieved. What I can say is that given the fact that I discovered I was unexpectedly pregnant half way through the year, I was forced to slow down and take it easy (for me). Reminder for my 2016 goals, specific, measurable, and time bound.

Make a bigger effort to cultivate & nurture the relationship in my life. Again another vague and unmeasurable goal that I can’t really claim to have accomplished.

Family Goals

Do more active things, complete a run, ride our bikes, hike.  We completed Color Me Rad, as a family in May, you can click here to read more about this race. We went on a handful of bike rides in late spring early summer, along with a couple of nature walk on the Sunshine Coast and at Shuswap Lake. We did fall short in the hiking department, however in my defense,  for much of the hiking season I was battling first trimester exhaustion and wasn’t as motivated as usual.

Work on my relationship with my Step-Kids Mom.  This sort of relationship can be complicated,  it’s not something that can be achieved in a year however I can say with some confidence that things are moving in the right direction.

 Business Goals

Take a business Course at BCIT to improve my skill set & start a blog. Double success here! I took a 12 week course at BCIT during the Spring/Summer semester, Social Media for Business. This course was extremely informative and was the springboard that ultimately helped me to publish my blog. I completed the course with 94% and my blog went live one month afterwards.

Meet with a program adviser to explore my options.  I find the feelings invoked when I am investing in my education a powerful motivator. After the success from my course I was  very interested in pursuing this goal, however not to long after that semester, and before fall semester I discovered I was pregnant. Understandably this goal will have to be shelved for the moment as our family prepares to welcome a new baby.

Health Goals

2015 BMO

2015 Vancouver BMO Marathon

Run a Half Marathon in under 2 hours. More success! I completed the BMO Vancouver Half Marathon in 1:58:44, you can click here to read more about my experience.

Improve my posture (forward shoulder roll). I cannot claim to have achieved this goal, working at a computer on a regular basis will make this a lifelong goal. I did purchase two Underworks, Posture Perfect Bands that I wore for several months while going to Minoru Chiropractic for several weeks.  Again this will be a lifelong focus, but notable improvement was made.

Be able to do a handstand. Didn’t achieve this goal, it’s been something I have always wanted to do, I didn’t get started on this goal right away and after discovering I was pregnant I was too nervous to pursue it in case I hurt myself.

Take tennis lessons. Fell short here, I could use the pregnancy as an excuse, but that isn’t the case. I just didn’t act soon enough in the spring, I was busy with my course and didn’t make it a priority.

Spiritual Goals

Read “Spirit Junkie”, by Gabrielle Bernstein, and “The Desire Map,” by Danielle LaPorte. I got as far as ordering The Desire Map but never read these books, instead I finished several great novels in the first half of the year and the following in the last half:

  1. What to Expect When You’re Expecting”, by Heidi Murkoff, Arlene Eisenberg, Sandee Hathaway

  2. “Healthy Beginnings,” by Dr. Nan Schuurmans, Dr. Vyta Senikas, Dr. André B. Lalonde,

  3. “I’m Pregnant! A Week-By-Week Guide from Conception to Birth,” by Lesley Regan, Joe Leigh Simpson.

  4. “Babycenter Pregnancy: From Preconception to Birth,” by Linda J. Murray (Editor)

Volunteer for 3 charities. My heart was in the right place however with half my year being consumed with pregnancy and family  I didn’t focus much time here. All was not lost, I did coordinate my 6th Annual Stocking Drive for a local transition house, raising a record 100 stockings.

 Financial Goals

Continue to reduce and eliminate unsecured debit. Proud to say I am well on my way. I made many financially responsible decisions this year, while still managing a family vacation, and obtaining a new and reliable car for our growing family.

Start a TFSA and save a minimum $1000 by the end of the year. We can check this one off as well. I was able to complete this early in the year helping to generate some momentum towards several financially sound choices. I secured life insurance, increased my RRSP contribution, paid down a loan, and reduced unsecured debit

 Word of the year

Let’s be honest I was grasping at straws when I chose Groovy for 2015, and it never caught on…the word of the year was PREGNANT.

In 2015 I followed my heart I never felt pressured to finish anything just because it was on the list. I worked through the new and unexpected journey of pregnancy taking things as they came and having faith it would all work out.

2015 was a year full of surprises…. and a little miracle 😉 I can’t wait until 2016!
