2019 Vancouver Sun Race Review

Last weekend I participated in the Sunrun, life has been so crazy over here that its taken me a week to sit down and put my race review together…..but as they say, Better late then never.

For those of you not local to Vancity, the Sunrun has been around since 1985, it has become one of Canada largest races, with top notch organization.

Just to give you an idea of growth over the last 33 years; the first run attracted 3,200 participants and in 2017 an incredible 41,924 registrants signed up.

The 10K route is a beautiful scenic course which begins in Vancouver’s downtown core at Burrard Street and Georgia Street.  An easy downhill start towards Stanley Park, continuing along English Bay to Hornby Street, then onto Pacific Avenue, across the Burrard Street bridge exiting onto 2nd Avenue. Winding along Fir Street to join 4th Avenue the route continues east on 6th Avenue to the Cambie Street Bridge for the final stretch across the bridge to the finish line.

Registration is $49 for early registration and $70 for late registration.

Entry Fee includes:

  • souvenir technical shirt. Youth size 2.5k Shaw Mini Sun Run participants will receive a paint-your-own T-shirt and a paint kit.
  • Race Bib with Timing Tag
  • Water stations and live entertainment along the course
  • Post-race party at BC Place

 LIKES:

  • Lively and fun ambiance –  Music and live entertainment throughout the race is motivating and entertaining.
  • Route –  The route starts on a downhill and finishes on a flat with minimal hills and picturesque views.
  • Organization and Volunteers- With numerous water stations and a well marked course., there were tons of volunteers helping to make this event run smoothly.

    DISLIKES:

  • Crowds – I am not a fan of feeling like a sardine when I run so this isn’t a run I generally look forward too.
  • Technical Shirt- A technical shirt is provided which makes for a great training shirt for future race. Make sure you size down as they are on the bigger side.
  • Date:   It is so close to the BMO half Marathon, participating affects my training as this weekend should be my last long run before tapering for the BMO.

 HOW DID I DO?

I was a bit annoyed when I took out my phone as I was crossing the Burrard street bridge and released that my Strava hadn’t been recording.  Thankfully I ran the race within 30 seconds of a CO-worker.  He was able to tag me in his run , so I have it in my recording.  Which is  good because much to my surprise with all my bobbing and weaving. I managed to get a new Personal Best 10Km time 53:38:0.

I was fortunate not to get stuck in the terrible hails storm.  It didn’t last too long  but I know many people weren’t so lucky and ended up cold and wet.

WOULD I DO THIS AGAIN?

Probably …… How about you?  Have you run, what was your experience like?
